In January 2017 the UK grid faced a perfect storm stemming from nuclear closures in France, nuclear trips in the UK, a broken inter-connector with France and then on 16th January the wind died for a week. These were the exact conditions that were expected to increase the blackout risk but the lights stayed on. This post describes how the UK pulled off this great escape.
