A retreat from range makes this the end of an era

The United States has more aircraft carriers than any other country does. These massive and expensive prestige weapons helped America dominate the world’s oceans in the years after World War II … but that era may be over.
This week on War College, we speak with retired U.S. Navy captain Jerry Hendrix.
Hendrix is the director of the Defense Strategies and Assessments Program at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, D.C. and the author of Retreat From Range: The Rise and Fall of Carrier Aviation.
Hendrix walks us through why he loves carriers so much … and why the Navy has to stop relying on them. With Russia and China developing new anti-ship ballistic missiles and ballooning costs for even the most basic aircraft, it’s time for the Navy to reassess how it projects power at sea.
