The Republican Roman Senate finally unsheathed its knives. As everyone knows, an illegally recorded and selectively edited video of Trump making bawdy sexual remarks 11 years ago was just released into the open maw of an imbecilic public. That an egocentric billionaire playboy might have once spoken outside the bounds of propriety for a supper with the Queen has apparently left many aghast.
Granted, such concerns as the Supreme Court, migrant swarms, war in the American state of Syria, and speech/gun constriction have to be balanced against the weight of pearls clutched to our breast. And for some, the misery of their posterity is simply not so acute as the question of: Did he really say grab their pussy? That’s the reason I’ll give my grandchildren as their hometown caliphate butts against the barrio. Hey, at least they’ll have conservative values.
And what’s more conservative than a party coup attempt one month before the election? That’s essentially what’s taking place with all of the endorsement retractions, funding refusals, and calls to step aside. There were easy, rational responses to Trump’s vagina monologue. Any of them needing simply to state the obvious: that the tape is stale private bluster dredged-up for nothing but Clinton’s political camouflage, and wholly unrelated to the interests of the American people. A people who, by the way, elected Bill Clinton twice.
But instead they come not to praise Trump, but to pretext him. They want their pampered party of genteel losers back from the usurper and his deplorable plebes. And when flimsiest opportunity was revealed, rhetorical blades flashed under the camera lights. What is a man’s country if he has lost his sinecure?
Though the risk with such open political assassinations is when your victim still mounts the lectern. A great deal of Trump’s campaign has been an accommodation to Republican priorities. His Reaganesque tax platform being the most obvious example. One Clinton has clubbed him for repeatedly. With Republican paymasters having already abandoned him entirely, and the apparatchiks now rushing to do likewise, Trump may find himself in the unusual position of being a man fully liberated. And that might be more interesting than his erstwhile party would like.
I imagine he will remain within the lanes of political orthodoxy, though someone both as wealthy and sensitive to betrayals as Trump could possibly decide to charge off the reservation spectacularly. Backstabbing republicans have certainly calculated this possibility, and would likely welcome it as him gifting back their party. But that would be overly optimistic on their part. The Age of the Cuck is waning manifestly, and it is difficult to envision millions of nascent national populists trudging grimly back to the enemies of their tribune. After this lurid public denunciation, how will republicans ever summon the straight-face necessary to exhort their right-flank to “come together” against future democrats?
Millions have now learned that the road to coming together is strictly a one-way street. And once a man grasps how badly he has been grifted, he rarely returns for seconds.
So will a gravely injured Trump quietly nurse his wounds or muster the legions? I don’t know. Though I do know treachery sires many bastard sons.
